Brigadier K W R D Abrew RWP RSP USP psc Hdmc 

Brigadier  Wasantha  De Abrew RWP RSP USP psc Hdmc has been serving as Principal Staff Officer of Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force  since 6th September  2017 after serving for a short period of nearly 6 months as Commandant Institute of Peace Support Operation in Sri Lanka (IPSOT- SL). He served as Assistant Military Secretary – 2  at Military Secretary’s Branch, Army Headquarters for more than three years where he shouldered the responsibilities which include HRM (Career Planning) aspects of officers in the ranks of senior Major and Lieutenant Colonel, Coord of protocol arrangements, handling of foreign delegations and Army events from September 2013 to  27 January 2017. During his career spanning over 30 years, he has held all many Command and Staff Appointments up to the Brigade Commander while serving in many operational areas.

He has attended a number of military training courses both home and abroad. He is a graduate of Army Command and Staff College in Sri Lanka. He has attended Young Officers Course in Bangladesh, Junior Command Course and Senior Command Course in India. He has followed Higher Defence Management Course (Hdmc) 2012/2013 in the College of Defence Management in Hyderabad, India.

He also holds Master of Management Studies degree from Osmania University, Hyderabad,  Diploma in General Diplomacy and International Relations  at Bandaranayake Diplomatic Training Institute –BMICH-Colombo in year 2006 and Diploma in Human Resource Management at University of Indor – India in year 2010. Further, he has also participated in Military Seminars/Study Tours to India, Singapore and Kazakhstan.

The important command appointments he held during his service include, Commanding Officer, 1st  Sri Lanka Light Infantry, Commander, 551 Brigade, and Commander, 553 Brigade during which he had a rare privilege of gaining experience of  commanding 2 Infantry Brigades during the period of Counter Terrorist Operations in the Northern and Eastern provinces. Later, he functioned as Commander, 583 Brigade  for a short period of 5 months prior to take over the appointment of Assistant Military Secretary-2 at Military Secretary’s Branch, Army Headquarters.

The significant Army Staff appointments he held include, appointments of General Staff Officer 2 (Plans), Directorate of Plans, General Staff Officer 1 (Operations) Headquarters 11Division  in year 2005, General Staff Officer 1 (Operations), Office of Chief of Defence Staff from 08 December 2005/2006, Colonel (Training) Army Training Command from  January 2012 to May 2012.

He was also employed as an Instructor while functioning as Dean – Faculty of Defence Studies, Kotelawala Defence University – Ratmalana from June 2008 to  November 2008. However, he relinquished his appointment due to the exigencies of service at the time and was appointed as a Brigade Commander.

He also had secured the opportunity of participating in the first ever Sri Lankan UN Peace Keeping Mission  to Haiti as a Company Commander and the Civil Military Coordinating Officer of the contingent in year 2004/2005 where he was able to grasp enormous experience in working with multinational/ religious and cultural environments.

He was decorated twice for valour of gallantry in recognition of  his exceptional performance in the  field with “Ranawickrama Paddakkama” and “Ranasura Padakkama” and with “Uttama Seva Paddakkama” for his Bravery, Meritorious and unblemished military conduct. In addition, he is a recipient of 10 other military decorations and medals which have been awarded to him for his dedicated and loyal service to the nation.

He is married to  Sujeewa and is having two daughters, Sanjula and Tharindi.
