BRIGADIER WHD MAHANADA

Brigadier W H D Mahanada is the Deputy Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force to have assumed Office on  30 May 2016.

On completion of his secondary education, he joined the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force as an Officer Cadet on 14 February 1986 and was commissioned as Second Lieutenant into 3 Battalion of Sri Lanka Army Sinha Regiment (Volunteer) on 27 June 1986. Subsequently, he rose to the ranks of Lieutenant (1989), Captain (1991), Major (1995), Lieutenant Colonel (2005), Colonel (2009) and Brigadier (2016) respectively.

During his distinguished career spanning over 29 years, he held many responsible appointments in the Sri Lanka Army in the capacities of Platoon Commander, Officer Commanding, Company Commander, Second in Command of 3 (Volunteer) Battalion Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, Commanding Officer of 3 (Volunteer) Battalion Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, Civil Affairs Officer Security Force Headquarters (West), Civil Affairs Officer Area Headquarters Kandy, Colonel Coordinating Officer (Volunteer Matters) 23 Division, Colonel Coordinating Officer (Volunteer Matters) Security Force Headquarters (East), Colonel Coordinating Officer (Volunteer Matters) Security Force Headquarters (Central), Staff Officer Grade One Regimental Headquarters Sri Lanka National Guard and Inspector of Training Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force.

To his credit, he has undergone following local training courses of professional value including Platoon Commander Course of the Volunteer Force Training School Diyatalawa, Company Commander Course, Small Operations Platoon Course, Second in Command Course at Infantry Training School Minneriya, Human Rights Course at Regimental Headquarters Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps Panagoda and Senior Officers’ Course at Volunteer Force Training School Diyatalawa.

He has been serving in the Sri Lanka Army over 29 years including Operational areas in the North and East and was awarded medals such as East Humanitarian Operations Medal, North Humanitarian Operations Medal, Purna Bhumi Padakkama, North and East Operations Medal, Riviresa Campaign Service Medal, 50th Independence Anniversary Medal, Sri Lanka Army 50th Anniversary Medal and Sri Lanka Armed Services Long Service Medal in appreciation of the services rendered by him to the Sri Lanka Army.

Brigadier W H D Mahanada is married to Ms Priyanthi and blessed with two daughters
